I appreciated the social worker initially asking the patient what his knowledge of infertility risk was prior to starting his treatment, as this helped to gauge what information he may have had coming into this experience. However, I feel as though it could have been beneficial for the social worker to devote more time to introducing their discussion during the visit and how the social worker could be helpful by further assessing what the patient is wondering about or worried about now. I am wondering if the patient is interested in having children and if so, when (if he knows), or if he is more concerned with what his partner will think about his potential infertility. I wonder what other questions might be helpful to ask patients at the start of these discussions.
I agree with you that the social worker did a good job at assessing the patient’s knowledge prior to starting the conversation. I think it would have been helpful to outline the conversation to the patient a little more.
