I agree with many posts above — this is a lot of information in such a short time. I appreciate that from my standpoint and have a better grasp on how exactly some of these procedures are done. However, from a patient’s perspective I feel much of this important information will be forgotten shortly after leaving the office. I also agree with others above that a pamphlet or other educational material (link to website with videos, etc.) would help.
I find a good way to discuss complex topics with patients is in written format with drawings that is interactive between the patient and myself. Usually this is in the form of a consent for surgery and they go home with a carbon copy of everything we talked about and my copy gets scanned into the EMR for reference at future visits.
