I think it is extremely important for the patient to feel comfortable being open regarding their sex life and identity/preferences. Tailoring this conversation based on age, orientation, identity, interest level, etc. would hopefully help patients to open up. Regarding a heterosexual female, I believe it would be important to not only discuss STI prevention and safe sex practices, but also contraception and risks associated. As a social worker, I would want to check in with the patient over time to see what has changed or address any concerns that come up. Education around hormonal birth control methods and barrier methods/the combination of both for protection is a vital discussion point.
